White Mountains, NH Scenic Drive – Fall 2007

A MULTI-NOTCH MOUNTAIN RIDE (approx. 142 miles)
This loop has several variations. From Conway, turn west on Rt. 112, the Kancamagus Highway (locals call it the Kanc), which offers 37 miles of stunning mountain scenery through the White Mountain National Forest.

In Lincoln, you can either turn north onto I-93 through Franconia Notch State Park and its soaring mountain peaks, then onto Rt. 3 to Twin Mountain and the junction with Rt. 302 OR you can continue west on Rt. 112 through Kinsman Notch to Rt. 302, which heads to Bath, Lisbon, Littleton, Bethlehem, Twin Mountain and Bretton Woods, home of the Mount Washington Hotel .

Rt. 302 continues east through Crawford Notch and past some of the most spectacular scenery in the East. In Bartlett, you can turn south on Bear Notch Road, a seasonal road that connects to the Kancamagus Highway west of Conway ; or you can join Rt. 16 in Glen and follow it back to your starting point in Conway.

If you turn north on Rt. 16 in Glen , you’ll go through Pinkham Notch , past the Mt. Washington Auto Road the Ride to the Sky to Gorham and the Great North Woods Ride.

I was visiting Houston in October 2005. I walked into the Lofts on Post Oak in Houston, TX and checked out of the above statement made sense. Here are a few pictures from the place.

Niagara Falls State Park is the oldest state park in the United States of America, established in 1885 as Niagara Reservation State park.

In geological terms, Niagara Falls is quite young. The formation of the Falls began at the end of the Ice Age. Huge torrents of water were released from melting ice and that water drained into what is now the Niagara River. About 12,300 years ago, the water plunged over the edge of the Niagara Escarpment, a cliff at what is now Lewiston, New York. The force of the water wore away the rock layers and Niagara Falls moved upstream until reaching its present location.

Long Beach on Long Island in New York

Long Beach is one of the older, more established communities on Long Island. Founded in 1880 when the first Long Beach Hotel was built, it continued to grow at a steady pace (the railroad arrived in 1882 promoting Long Beach as a resort community for vacationers). The major attraction in its development was the fact that Long Beach is an oceanfront island along Long Island’ s south shore which has a moderating effect on its climate. Long Beach averages 10 degrees warmer in the winter and 10 degrees cooler in the summer than inland communities on Long Island and New York City. With the ocean on one side and the bay on the other, Long Beach developed as a seaside community.

Watkins Glen State Park near Seneca Lake among the Finger Lakes of New York State.

¤ Named in 2005 as one of Reserve America’s Top Outdoor Locations and one of the Top 100 Campgrounds in the nation.

Watkins Glen State Park is the most famous of the Finger Lakes State Parks, with a reputation for leaving visitors spellbound. Within two miles, the glen’s stream descends 400 feet past 200-foot cliffs, generating 19 waterfalls along its course. The gorge path winds over and under waterfalls and through the spray of Cavern Cascade. Rim trails overlook the gorge. Campers and day-visitors can enjoy the Olympic-size pool, scheduled summer tours through the gorge, tent and trailer campsites, picnic facilities and excellent fishing in nearby Seneca Lake or Catherine Creek, which is renowned for its annual spring run of rainbow trout.

Buttermilk Falls Ithaca NY

Buttermilk Falls State Park takes its name from the foaming cascade formed by Buttermilk Creek as it flows down the steep valley side toward Cayuga Lake. The upper park has a small lake, hiking trails through woodlands and along the gorge and rim, picnic areas and playing fields. The lower park has a campground, pool and playing fields, beyond which is Larch Meadows. Larch Meadows is a moist, shady glen and wetland area through which a nature trail winds.

Buttermilk falls in Ithaca, NY. Just when fall was about to reach the peak around the end of October 2005. Loads of rain had fallen during the week, and had made it a perfect place for the weekend.

And up we go along the path besides the waterfall. Feeling the cold. moist and refreshing spray all along.
